Q. Can I use a handheld metal detector as a MEDISCAN substitute?

A. The hand held metal detectors are designed to perform surface detection only, with a penetration scan depth of approximately 3-4 inches. This unit is very useful in scanning people since layers of clothing rarely exceed 1-2 inches even in cold climates.

With regard to scanning medical waste...we have had customers try it in conjunction with other deeper penetrating scanning devices such as the MEDISCAN. However I wouldn't recommend using it as a substitute all together. Considering the fact fact that medical waste/laundry/trash bags can average several feet in diameter, a HHMD would only penetrate the outer shell of the scan target by a few inches, leaving the core of the bags untouched.
